The numerous untamed flying islands of the Skysea attract a vast quantity of Sky Pirates, Mercenaries, and Explorer groups hoping to control large amounts of territory and amass wealth.
Impact
Sky piracy is a problem at least for smaller trading companies of the Mercantile Hegemony and trade routes, but are mostly kept at bay from larger trade routes, by armed escorts. Most sky pirates, operate smaller attack craft preferring high speed airships as its easier to evade capture and enemy counter attacks. It isn’t as prevalent as many people think but it does happen.
They rarely board actual airships as the heavy armor on them means it would take too long to bore through and the risk to them is too great, instead they focus on targeting older transports with cargo that is simply tied down or on wide decks. They also tend to target naval and ground trade routes as its easier to swoop in drop a magnetic claw and simply yank up armored and metal cargo containers. As for long range travel they operate from on main base but have several smaller camps with fuel, and other necessities. This allows them to extend the range of their marks and gives them safe places to drop off stolen goods to come back for at a later time.
Some times pirates are hired to raid enemy trade routes by larger nations and they are supplied with weapons and airship parts that allow them to target heavily armored airships. But this is rare as its is far more dangerous. More common is that they are hired to steal from competitors by trade conglomerates.
