Yeast is a doppelganger who wears Alistair’s face. Raum, the Harvest Terror, wove him from Alistair’s stolen thoughts and secrets to serve as a lure in the Fields of the Crow. When Isra played the Banjo of Ol’ Jericho Sticks and broke the demon’s charm, Yeast was freed with a will of his own. He turned on Raum, helped the Misfits kill it, and has been tagging along since.

He was born wearing Alistair’s face, voice, and memories, and has nothing else of Alistair at all. Rather than walk around as a second Alistair, Yeast quickly settled into a form of his own: a young woman with long, curly hair, an easy face that fits in anywhere and belongs to no one he has to answer for. That is who the party sees day to day now.

Personality — the anti-Alistair

Where Alistair is gentle, Yeast is a live wire in the same skin. Play him as the exact inverse:

AlistairYeast
Kind and soft-spokenCrude, loud, and blunt to a fault
Timid, freezes in dangerReckless and fearless, first into every fight
Refined, well-mannered nobleNo manners, no filter, feet on the table
Careful with his fortuneSpends, gambles, and gives away coin on a whim
Reserved and chasteShamelessly flirtatious and appetite-driven
A peacemakerA troublemaker who pokes the bear for fun
Sentimental about family and the pastCares nothing for the Frey name or where he came from

The unsettling twist: for all his rudeness, Yeast is honest in a way Alistair never is. He says the thing everyone is thinking, cheerfully, at the worst moment. He named himself Yeast because he likes that yeast makes things rise, bubble over, and get lively, which is exactly what he does to a room.

Abilities

A Doppelganger: he can shapeshift into any Small or Medium humanoid he has seen and read surface thoughts. His default now is the curly-haired young woman he adopted for himself, but he can slip back into Alistair’s face (or anyone else’s) when the party needs it. This makes him a superb infiltrator and a walking liability in equal measure.

Hooks & Tensions

  • A face of his own. Choosing the curly-haired girl was Yeast’s first real act of self: he did not want to be a second Alistair. That he can still put Alistair’s face back on at any moment is the asset and the danger.
  • Whose side is he on? He fought for the party once. Loyalty is a choice he has not really made yet.
  • Monty. It gets complicated fast when this bold, crude stranger drops Alistair’s voice out of a girl’s mouth, or, worse, slips back into Alistair’s face to needle him.
  • The hunter. Aurelia’s Hunter could use a shapeshifter, or be fooled by one.
